Born 1930, studied medicine at the Leningrad Medical Military Academy, Russia (1949-1955). It was here he obtained basic research education and wrote first scientific article that reported the results of experimental observations on some physiological functions. After that he changed field of interest and began to study interrelations between members of microbe-victim ecological systems. He became her candidate of Medical Sciences degree after works on the field of acquired immunity (1962).

After obtaining his medical degree dr. Rumyantsev continued his graduate research at the Sverdlovsk Medical Military Institute with a goal to assess the real danger of botulinus toxins (types A, B, C, D, E and F) as bioweapons. During this time, he became interested in the manifestations and molecular constitution of genetic immunity.

After obtaining his doctoral degree, Dr. Rumyantsev went to the Leningrad Institute of Vaccines and Sera to work on the biomechanics of anti-infectious defense. He was fortunate to be able to pursue his interest in the development of principles and means to differentiate individual states of genetic immunity or susceptibility to infections in human and animals. His studies have allowed him to evaluate the effects of bioweapons, both in battle and terror, as well as to elaborate on the hypothesis of individualized anti-infectious prophylaxis based on individual genetic indications.

A decade later, in October 1972, he presented the doctorate thesis entitled ”Evolutionary aspects of clostridiosis epidemiology”. It illuminates a new concept of epidemiology based on the principles of mutal evolution of the microbe-victim ecological systems and creation of constitutional (genetic) immunity of host and pathogenicity of microbes by mechanism of molecular ecological natural selection. This concept was contrary to the beliefs of most of the epidemiologists and immunologists of the time.

Fresh from doctorate theses S.N. Rumyantsev attended to understand the essence of constitutional (genetic) immunity. From the time on, his main research interest centered in that very little discovered area of immunology. The first monograph of S.N. Rumyantsev entitled „Evolution of Clostrediosis” was published by Meditsina, Moscow, 1974. A monograph entitled „Constitutional immunity and its molecular ecologica principles” was published by Nauka Publishing, Leningrad, 1983. The presented by S.N. Rumyantsev concept of immunology was contrary to the beliefs of most of the immunologist of the time. It came about a decade before the acceptance of the concept by 8th World Congress of Virology (West Berlin, 1990), 8th World Congress of Immunology (Budapest 1992), 17th International Congress of Genetics (Birmingham, UK 1993) and first publication of S.N. Rumyantsev' program article in Immunology Today (1992). It must be note, that the first international conference on the genetic immunity was organized by Pasteur Institute (Paris, France) at October 1996.

During past decade S.N. Rumyantsev attend to investigate the individual inherent constitutional predisposition and immunity to meningo coccal infection, influenza, hepatitis, AIDS. As a result of the fresh investigation S.N. Rumyantsev and his team has elaborated some methods on preparations for testing constitutional predisposition and immunity to salmonellosis, meningococcal infection, influenza. S.N. Rumyantsev was invited to visit the Stockholm University (1989) and the Harward Medical School (1995) where he gave seminars on constitutional immunity.

At September 1994 S.N. Rumyantsev was selected and named as a Soros Professor.

Rumyantsev, M.D., Ph.D. has been a member of The Science Advisory Board since April 2002 and was serving as a member of the Board’s 2004-2005 Steering Committee.

Currently, since 2002, Dr. Rumyantsev is the Head of Department of Evolutionary Immunology, Andent, Inc. Jersey City, New Jersey 07302, USA

In his current position, he performed series of pioneer investigations on the topics of cancer xenogamous origin and pandemic spread, obesity, atherosclerosis, haptenology, selective functions of hereditary immunity in the descent and subsequent evolution of Homo sapiens.
